Congratulations again to our athletes who raced in Beaumont today!!!

The Terry Fox Run is tomorrow.  Hot dogs will not be served this year, instead, students will be receiving a juice box and fruit.  We will be gathering in the gym around 10 am and hope to be back in the classroom by around 11:30 am.  If you are available to volunteer for the morning, please let the office, or Mr. G, know.  FI you have not brought in your Toonie for Terry, you can still bring it in tomorrow.

In Science today, students were asked the question: Will all materials absorb the same amount of water?  We tested several different materials and found that materials absorb DIFFERENT amounts of water.  The sponge and dish cloth absorbed the MOST water while kleenex absorbed the LEAST amount. We also discovered that plastic baggie, tin foil, wax paper and nylon fabric all REPEL water.  Ask your child to find an example of materials found in your home that ABSORB water and some that REPEL water.  Have them write the names of these materials in their agendas.  We will share our discoveries tomorrow.

Congratulations to the 2S athletes who raced in Wetaskiwin on Saturday!

In Math today, we extended an increasing pattern to show how many wheels 6 wagons would have.

1 wagon - 4 wheels
2 wagons - 8 wheels
3 wagons - 12 wheels......

Our pattern rule was to add 4.  We counted that 6 wagons would have 24 wheels.

Ask your child, "How many socks would we need for everyone in our family?"  Then collect a pair of socks for everyone and count the socks.

  • Tomorrow is cross-country for 7 of our students.  Good luck!
  • New WWW/POW went home today!

Happy First Day of Autumn!

In Science, we predicted how many drops of water we could stack onto a penny.  The most drops was 45!!!  We talked about how the water looked like a "bubble" on the penny.  This force/"skin" that holds the water together is called surface tension.  Many of us have felt how strong this force is....when we belly flop into the pool!  Ouch!

In Art we read a story and then went outside to collect beautiful fall leaves. We used those leaves to create a Leaf Man!

Another busy day....

In Math today we built increasing patterns using Unifix Cubes.

WWW/POW was due today.  If your child has not yet returned his/her black duotang, it must be here for tomorrow.

Tomorrow is our first WWW test....please have your child review their words.

Some liquids are more dense than others!

In science today, we learned that some liquids are more dense than others.  We found that corn syrup was the heaviest (most dense) and that oil was the lightest (least dense).

In math today, we were able to predict elements in a pattern and fill in what is missing.

Home Connection:

Make a pattern (plate, spoon, mug, spoon) and repeat the core 3 times.  Remove some items and ask your child, "What's missing?"  Then ask, "Where does the next spoon go?"

Just to confirm:

POW/WWW work is due back by FRIDAY.

Enjoy reading your library books this long weekend!

Students enjoyed their first book of the year with Mrs. Becker and then were able to sign out 3 titles.

In Math we made and described increasing patterns.  Increasing patterns grow in a way you can predict.  What number comes next in this increasing pattern?

2,4,6,8, ___

1, 10, 100, 1000, ___

In reading, we discussed things that Make Us Scream and then made our first Travel Book pages.....coming to your home soon!

There is not any school tomorrow.  I will be attending the BGRS Welcome Back and Long Service Awards (where I will be receiving my 15 year pin!) and then headed back to Devon for a staff meeting and presentation on Positive Behaviour Support.  Have a super weekend!

Beautiful T-Shirts!

Happy Birthday, Delaney!  Thank you for the delicious cupcakes.  We hope that you had a fabulous day!

Wow...we were some spiffy looking boys and girls at the assembly today!  Well done on the t-shirts.  Remember to put them somewhere safe until we need them again!

In Math today, we circled the core in patterns and named 2 attributes in each pattern.  Students then created their own pattern, circled the core and shared the 2 attributes.  Tomorrow we will be learning the term:  Growing Patterns.  Can you guess what that might mean?

We had a fire drill at school today.  Congratulations 2S!  We got out quickly and safely.  In Health today, we continued with Fire Safety.  We sequenced a story about Fire Safety.  We also discussed fire escape plans.  We have one here at school, do you have one for your home?

Library and Computers tomorrow.  If you have not sent in headphones with your child, please do so for tomorrow.

Transparent or Opaque?

In Science today we continued to discover other liquids than water.  We smelled them, felt whether they were smooth or sticky, examined the colour, watched how they moved and tested whether it was transparent or opaque.  Ask your child to define transparent and opaque.

A white, loooong letter was sent home today...it should be in your child's green folder.  Just a little more information on how things work in 2S.  Please complete the bottom portion and return it with your child.

Hot Lunch order forms went home.  They are due by September 19th.

Assembly tomorrow morning....I will give your child their t-shirt AT SCHOOL.  The t-shirt will be sent home tomorrow.  Periodically thoughout the year, your child will be asked to wear their shirt, so please keep it somewhere "safe".

We have computers tomorrow, so if at all possible, please send a set of headphones with your child.

Have you ever given "A Hundred Million Kisses"?

In Reading today, we read the story, A Hundred Million Kisses  by Wendy Lewis.  This personal recount is about Kate getting kisses from family members...and more.  In the story they talked about Butterfly Kisses....ask your child to give you one tonight.

In Math we continued with Patterns.  We created patterns and circled the Pattern Core.  Mitchell noticed that his shirt had a pattern!  It had blue and green stripes.  Does your child have any clothes that are patterned?

This week:
  • Assembly on Wednesday...feel free to join us for the revealing of our 2S t-shirts!
  • Professional Development Day on Friday - no school!
  • We have library on Thursday this week!

Wow...I can't believe the weather!

Book Orders went home yesterday - they are due back on October 1st!

Club Moo orders went home yesterday - They are due back no later than September 14th!

The SUTP fundraiser went home today.

Today students learned to spell the names of 10 friends' names. There are 10 names on our word wall!

We used our own Woozles to create patterns. Students changed one attribute of their Woozle, either its colour, shape, hair or number of dots to make a pattern.  Some students changed 2 attributes in their pattern!

We learned a new Spelling Game...Word Shapes.  Using a thirty-sided alphabet dice, the goal of the game is to fill in their Word Shapes gameboard with correctly spelled words.  Having the shape drawn around the word can help some children visualize the word and connect it to the appropriate letters.

Smokin' Hot Summer Day!

Just a couple of reminders....

  • We will be designing our class t-shirts on Friday.  If you have not sent a t-shirt to school with your child, please do before Friday.
  • It is NOT early dismissal tomorrow.
  • If you have not returned the "mega pile" of forms yet, please do so as soon as possible.
In Math today, we started Unit 1:  Patterning.  Using Woozles (from an interactive Smartboard activity), we learned the term:  attribute.  We saw Woozles who were either red or blue, had hair or no hair, were curvy or straight, or had 1 dot or 2 dots.  Single attributes were changed in each pattern.  Using a pattern, we were able to predict what would come next.  Is your child able to identify patterns around your home?

An end to a short week....

Well, the first week is officially over!  The students worked hard today interviewing friends, completing a BINGO getting to know you activity and learning a new game of Math War.  The afternoon flew by as we completed our first journal entry, hilighting our summer.  Gym was a blast and we started our Art Portfolios.

There is not any school on Monday.....have a super weekend!

Just a reminder....we will be making our shirts next Friday.  If you have not sent a black shirt with your child, please do so for next week.

The First Day of School....

Welcome to our blog! I hope that all of you had a terrific summer and that you enjoyed your first day as a grade 2 student!
Thank you to all the parents who attended the Meet the Teacher night last night. It was great to meet all of you and to see your beautiful children again! I am looking forward to an amazing year!

Please check your child's backpack, as there are several notes which will be coming home this evening.

The plan for tomorrow was to paint t-shirts, but because of our hectic afternoon with the parade and dismissal, I was unable to ensure that everyone received the note.  We will be painting our class shirts next Friday. Please ensure you send your child to school with a black short sleeved t-shirt to decorate by then.

See you in the morning!
