Grade Six Christmas Picture Books!

Today we enjoyed listening to many Christmas stories that the Grade 6 classes from Riverview wrote.  Some comments from 2S:

"They were good - no they were great," Mitchell said.
"The kids' reading skills were incredible," Eyvind said.
"There were great pictures," Delaney said.
"The stories were creative," said Zack.
"The pictures were rocking and rolling," said Cole Haniak.

Thank you to our skate tiers today!

A huge thank you to Mrs. Forchuk, Mr. Klassen, Mrs. Hugh (and her troop), Mrs. Haniak and Mrs. Peace for coming to the rink today to help with tying skates!

We are skating all this week from 10:50 - 11:50.  You are more than welcome to join us on the ice or with tying skates.

There are not any new Word Wall Words this week.  Feel free to use this week to review any words that your child may be struggling with.

Welcome to 2S, Kale!

Kale!
In Science, we had fun testing different magnets to see which one was the strongest!

The cow magnet was the strongest!

In Math, we played a game to help us understand that the order of numbers in a subtraction sentence matters!

Likes Repel and Opposites Attract

In math we solved subtraction mysteries. Students used the knowledge they gained working through addition mysteries to solve subtraction mysteries like: 16 - __ = 8

In science today we learned that magnets have two poles:  a north pole (not the place where Santa lives) and a south pole.  When we put like poles of a magnet are put together (south and south OR north and north), we could feel them pushing away from each other (repel).  When we put opposite poles of a magnet together (north and south OR south and north), we could feel them pull together (attract)!

Let's Go Fishing!

In Science, we asked the question:  Does a magnet attract all materials?

Students had fun using a "fishing rod" lined with a magnet to find items which were "attracted" or "not attracted" to the magnet.  Students had a blast...

Congratulations on a job well done last night, 2S!

What a great looking group!  Poor Jorja!

Happy belated Birthday, Deleani!
2S Parents,

We are actively seeking volunteers for the following:

Art – Friday, December 16th 1:00pm-2:00pm – Students will be making a special Christmas gift for their parents. If there are any grandparents who would be willing to come in, it would be appreciated. Alternatively, if your child would be alright with you coming in, we would appreciate all the hands we can get!

Skating – December 19th - December 23rd 10:50am-11:50am – We are actively seeking any volunteers who are willing to come in and tie skates on the 5 days that we are skating. The reward: sore fingers and tons of smiles from darling little 7 year olds!!

THANK YOU!!!

An extremely strong magnet!
We began our next Science Unit - Magnetism.  Equipped with a magnet in hand, students explored our classroom looking for things that "stuck to" and "didn't stick to" their magnet.  They had to define "magnets" in their own words...my favourite: "they're metal grabbers" by Arianwen.
