In Math this week, we worked on Mystery Addition and Subtraction sentences. Students used a number line to help figure out the mystery number. We also learned that the order in addition does not matter and the order in subtraction does matter. An example of Mystery math sentences look like this:
____ + 8 = 15
17 - ____ = 9
Below is a link to a fun game that we played to help strengthen basic fact skills. We called it Magic 11!

Happy Birthday, Elliot!
In Math today we learned a new game which can be played with either 2 or 3 people - it's called Greatest Number War. It's fun to play and all you need is a deck of cards with the 10s and face cards removed. The object of the game is to get all of your opponent's cards. You play the game by flipping over 2 cards - the first card is the tens digit, the second card is the ones digit. The player with the greatest number wins the cards!

One down...two to go!
Wow - what a short week!
In Language Arts, we are researching the Polar Bear. We started the project off by filling in a K-W-L Chart - what we already knew about Polar Bears and what we want to know about Polar Bears.
In Math, we worked on our Chrome Books creating a document illustrating the meaning of equal, not equal, less than and greater than - I am so pleased with the ease at which students are completing these technology projects!
Due to the short week, I have not sent home new WWW, new Word Sort or Home Reading. Please use this week to review.

Have a super weekend!
In Math, we completed our Math Worshops for this week. Our focus was Counting with Coins.
HOME CONNECTION:
Place 6 pennies in a row. Ask your child: "How many pennies are there?" Add a dime to the row and ask: "How much money is there altogether?" Continue using dimes to count until you reach 96 cents.
We also began our first unit in Social Studies: Looking At Places. We will be studying about what the land is like, and how each community began. The three communities we are focusing on are: Iqaluit, Nunavut; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Meteghan, Nova Scotia.

Today we disguised a turkey, as a pigeon, so he won't be eaten on Thanksgiving! We wrote to try and convince families to eat hot dogs rather than turkey on Thanksgiving. Writing from the turkey's point of view, we wrote about why hot dogs are a better choice for their holiday meal!

Careful!! Be Safe!
This afternoon, we used our Chrome Books to produce a poster identifying safe practices for handling hot and cold materials! Students typed in their rule, inserted a picture and played with background colour on their slide. So impressed!
In Math, students have been creating and solving problems using repeating and growing patterns.
Home Connection: Ask your child, "How many socks would we need for everyone in our family?" Then collect a pair of socks for everyone and count the socks.
Word Wall Words - I have posted this week and last week's WWW. These are the Grade 2 High Frequency words which your child is expected to read and spell correctly in their writing. Students will practice these words daily in our Rise and Shine Binder, however, will not be tested on them.

Chocolate Milk Slurpees
In Science today, students were asked whether a liquid would change or stay the same when cooled. We poured chocolate milk and sweetened condensed milk into a freezer bag and super cooled it in ice. It took longer than expected, but our liquid began to change into a solid! We put the remainder of the Chocolate Milk Slurpees into the "super cooler" (aka the freezer) overnight to see if it became MORE of a solid. Not only did we begin to see a change in the state of chocolate milk, it also tasted delicious!
Discuss: Do you think a solid would change when heated?
