All of the students in 2S are super proud of their Polar Bear water colours.  They turned out beautifully!  These paintings will look stunning, framed and hung on the wall in your home - stop by and take a peek!  A huge thank you to Mrs. Toogood, who planned, prepped, taught and displayed this amazing art project!

Today we checked out the live cam from the San Diego Zoo.  It was cool to watch the Polar Bears having so much fun! Polar Bear Camera!

We started our morning off with Drum Fit!  So fun!

What's 80s Day without making Friendship Pins, playing a game of Jeopardy or doing the Chicken Dance?

Lovin' the warm temperature!

We continued our research on the Polar Bear today.  Students enjoyed spending time browisng through non-fiction books, learning facts about Polar Bears!

In Math today, we began the Addition and Subtraction to 18 unit.  Students used the letters in their first and last names to write addition and subtraction sentences.

As a culminating project for our Hot and Cold Temperatures unit, students will be making a Hot Chocolate Storage container.  Information was sent home today, outlining the expectations.  Please note:  There is a typo on assignment.  The due date should have read January 23, 2015.

In Language Arts today, we brainstormed what we already knew and what we wanted to learn about Polar Bears.  We watched a super cute video of a Mama bear and her cubs.  Students are excited to learn more about these fascinating creatures!

• 80s Day on Wednesday!

We survived the first cold snap of 2015!

We all wished we were Polar Bears this week, so that we wouldn't be effected by these frigid temperatures!!  We learned the term insulator today.  Through a simple experiment, using lard, 2 baggies, and ice water, we were able to see how a Polar Bear's 'blubber' acts as an insulator to keep it warm in the Arctic!

We also did an experiment to answer the question:  Are mittens warm?  We found out that mittens are not warm, but they act as insulators to keep our body heat in.

In Math today, we completed our 3rd rotation of Math Workshops.  At the end of the rotation, students had a chance to build some large towers using 3-D objects!

Welcome Back!

What a wonderful surprise for RBES Staff this morning!  Thank you to the many parents and families of RBES!  Our staffroom, over the Christmas break, was given a much needed make-over! 

New Home Reading was sent home.

This is a reminder of the importance of nightly home reading.  Students who read for 20 minutes per night will read roughly 1.8 million words in a year!  Quality exposure to words (books) is essential to becoming a good reader.

Please ensure your child ​is reading nightly and ​returns his/her home reading bag on Friday so that he/she will have new books for the following week.

New Word Sort - Word sorts this week are contractions.  Students are expected to be able to match the contraction (i.e.: it's) with it's long form (i.e.: it is) and also to spell all contractions. Spelling test will be on Friday. 

In Math today, we began our exploration of 3D Objects.  We looked at the attributes of cubes, spheres, cylinders, pyramids, cones and rectangular prisms.  We noticed that 3D objects have faces that are 2D Shapes!  During Math Workshops this week, we will describe, identify, compare and sort 3D objects.

We have our first library block of 2015 tomorrow!
