Happy Birthday, Cole!

In Math today, we shared Number Stories and wrote related number sentences.  As we wrote number sentences, we noticed that all of the numbers were in each number sentence!

********  *****

Cole received 8 Happy Birthday wishes from his friends.  After recess, he received 5 more Happy Birthday wishes.  How many Happy Birthday wishes did did Cole receive today?

8 + 5 = 13
5 + 8 = 13
13 - 8 = 5
13 - 5 = 8

In Language Arts, I tripped over Deleani Forchuk!  I dropped the picture book I was carrying - the pages were all out of order!  I gathered up the pages and read it anyways.  We found it VERY difficult to understand.  This unorganized story reminded us that we need to make sure that our stories are organized with a beginning, middle and end in order for our readers to make sense of what we are trying to say!

We completed the 250 piece Canada Puzzle!

2S absolutely LOVES building puzzles!! If you have any old puzzles at home that you are not using (about 250 pieces?), we would love to build them!  We can return them when we are finished!

We have completed our Photo Reel assignments for the three communities that we are studying in Social Studies....well done, 2S!  They look amazing!

Peter Pan!

Today all of the grade 2, 3 and 4s from Robina Baker travelled to St. Albert and watched the St. Albert Children's Theatre's (http://sact.ca/index.php) presentation of Peter Pan. It was an amazing performance! The hi-lights for 2S students were:

Flying Peter Pan

The gigantic crocodile

The sword fight between Peter Pan and Captain Hook.

Thank you to Mrs. Forchuk and Mrs. Peace who accompanied our class.

Today we continued with the concept of "visualization". Students listened to the story, "This Little Light of Mine" and imagined what the story was about. They then brainstormed in groups to create an illustration and short paragraph which they shared with the class. When we re-read the story and looked at the illustrations, students were shocked to see that the story had nothing to do with "light" as they perceived it (flashlights, lanterns, candles, fireflies) and instead it was about a boy whose actions create expressions of joyful radiance on the faces of the other characters in the story.

In Math today, we began Unit 3:  Addition and Subraction to 18.  In this unit, your child will be developing strategies for adding and subtracting 1-digit numbers.  We used the Frayer's Model (Image below) to think about and describe the meaning of addition.

Operation Christmas Child!

Thank you to all of our incredible 2S students and families!!  We exceeded our goal of filling 2 boxes for Operation Christmas Child.  We filled 3 boxes and still had stuff that didn't fit!  WoW!!

See you on Friday!

I will be attending a conference for the next two days at Barnett House.  Ms. Moravec will be in for me.

In Math today, we continued our focus of putting numbers in order.  Once students finished their assignment, they played a game with dice.  They had to roll four 2-digit numbers using two dice.  Next, they had to put these numbers in order from least to greatest OR greatest to least.

We began our second rotation of Learning Centres;  Math, Making Words, Poetry, Squiggle Writing and Write Around The School!

Our Social Studies take home assignment went home today.

Enjoy the long weekend!

No school tomorrow

A green note was sent home today in regards to our class filling two Operation Christmas Children boxes. This is optional, but I would love to see 2S fill a boy an a girl box. Items must be sent to school next week as the boxes need to be completed by November 21. Thanks for helping us make another child's Christmas special.

In Math, students worked with partners to solve a problem using "use objects" and "guess and check" strategies.  Ask your chld to solve the problem:  You have 5 coins that equal 31 cents.  What could the coins be?  Have them draw a picture of their solution.  Have them explain the situation to the problem.  Ask: "How do you know the coins show 31 cents?"

In Writing today, we completed our Squiggle writing.  I am very impressed with the creative drawings and writings that resulted from this project.  This work will become Squiggle Book Number 1!  Coming soon!

Kiwano Fruit....

In class today, Mitchell brought an extremely different type of fruit.  It is called Kiwano Fruit.  Most students sampled it.  Some described it as "gross", "kind of like a grape", and kind of like a kiwi".

In Math today, we used Base Ten Materials to illustrate the meaning of place value for numbers.  Students rotated through six stations, placing Base Ten Materials on a Place Value Mat.  Each student had to record the number of rods (Tens) and unit cubes (Ones) to make a number.
